The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that in 2023, the union membership rate was 10%, a minimal change from the percentage in 2022. This rate is based on the percentage of wage and salary workers who were members of unions; the number of these workers is 14.4 million, a number which showed very little movement over the past year.
This data on union membership was collected as part of the Current Population Survey, which obtains information on employment and unemployment within the nation.
The data reflected that in 2023, nonunion workers had median weekly earnings that were 86% of the earnings of union members. The data also said that the industries with the highest unionization rates in 2023 included utilities (19.9%), transportation and warehousing (15.9%), educational services (12.9%), and motion picture and sound recording industries (12.1%).
